You are probably correct and my interpretation of what I have read was largely based on ignorance. I think I got the "what the crystal clock is about" right, but the intermittent direct interface with the ring oscillator/CPU flat wrong. The great thing about this is that, as you describe it, the despartity between our claims and prior art is even more overwhelming.
