The Yahoo charts for funds like fsagx are not very informative because they do not include distributions in the price. FSESX, the energy counterpart to fsagx, for example, has had better price appreciation but weaker distributions. Take a look on Morningstar. I've held fsagx for 5 years and I'm doing better than 20% a year in my retirement account when you include distributions.

The reason the price appreciation in gold will help LBSU is that the consolidators are going to need to expand, and they will buy juniors with great prospects, or partner with them, to do so. The more gold appreciates, the more LBSU's claims are worth even without pounds in the ground. I don't expect a one to one appreciation with the price of gold, but as the majors reap profits and look to expand, the value of the targets will increase.
