Oil today is synonymous with inflation, security concerns, climate change, global warming and anything that is on the dark side. The drive to find alternative energy is at its highest and activities to find substitutes have been increasing with all combination to find substitutes being explored. Solar, wind, geothermal, biofuels, ethanol and the list goes on. The intensity of the activity reflects the sentiment on the main street.
It is also time for reality check. All these technologies are still under development and are potential contenders as substitutes for energy source. The fact remains at present hydrocarbons are the best sources of energy. Till new energy source is established the nearest substitute for oil is natural gas. It is available regionally and can be produced out of biological processes as well. In countries like China, India and Brazil this technology is already put to use at commercial scale.
The infrastructure for large scale retail purposes is not fully developed even while technology is being perfected. However the shale oil and gas does mitigate many of the concerns of the think tanks.
