There is a difference between what is currency and what is considered precious.

Currency is a unit of exchange, facilitating the transfer of goods and/or services.

Diamonds are precious but they aren't currency. Oil is precious but it isn't currency. Gold is precious and can be used as currency. I've never seen in North America someone using oil to buy goods and services. I've seen it with gold and with silver.
