I have a different take, which I believe the article misses. The equity markets are predictors of the ecomomy. If the equity markets are doing well then an economic upswing is coming and if the equity markets decline we could be looking at a recession (it truly is a chicken and egg question of do the equity markets lag and follow the economy or do is it predict the economy).
