Thought it would be interesting to post the economic conditions of the eastern Ghana region where MEX has the Sian deposit. From the Ghana section of Newmont's website:
Economic characteristics: The Eastern Region has a total of 927,699 persons (75.5%) who are economically active and 299,913 persons (24.5%) not economically active. Within the economically active population, 87 percent worked during the 7 days before the census, 4.6 percent had a job but did not work and 8.4 percent were unemployed. There is no major difference between the percentage of males (87.8%) and females (86.2%) who worked during the period.
Similarly, the unemployment percentages for males (8.1%) and for females (8.7%) are comparable. The not economically active population is made up largely of students (35.6%) and homemakers (24.8%). Males make up the majority of the student population while females predominate among homemakers. The proportion of the aged and the retired/pensioners is higher for females (19.3%) than for males (14.2%). This pattern of economic activity shows little variation from district to district within the region. There is very little difference between the percentage of male physically challenged persons (3.8%) and female physically challenged persons (3.7%).
