Holmes and his team at US Global Investors put a lot of quantitative work into stories like this.
They also distribute a free "alert" each weekend that's excellent reading in my book. You can also catch Frank often on CNBC. I catch him mostly on CNBC Europe (http://www.cnbc.com/id/15838668) which like the Asian edition, is not "dumbed down" so much like the American version.
